Most of the people who take fitness regime tend to follow different diet chart where in they sacrifice their favorite foods and starve themselves under the name of diet. This will in no way help in maintaining health but instead detains health and the skin. A proper diet is the one with which one is happy and also able to maintain good health, as the dieticians say regular intake of food in small quantities can help on to be healthy and active. One can maintain good body and be happy not by sacrificing his food desire but by taking small quantities of what you like to satisfy your cravings, because when you appreciate yourself that’s when you are beautiful and appreciation is only possible one is happy with themselves.

Health Benefits of Tea

Can you imagine a day without tea? As a tea lover, I know the answer is a ‘big fat no’. Even imagining a day without tea is impossible. If Newton’s apple has made our life complicated, Shennong’s boiling water helps us to get over it, at least for a moment. What if the leaves hadn’t fell in and turned the water red? Newton would have covered our mind with clouds of concept. Although it’s a conspiracy theory still we can thank the emperor for his discovery. Tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after water. It equals the consumption of coffee, chocolate, soft drink and alcohol combined. I’ve always wondered why? Why is it so that tea is the most important part of our everyday life? What are the benefits of having tea?

I came across many benefits which answered my questions. Some of them are:

  • It contains antioxidants.
  • It has less caffeine than coffee.
  • It reduces the risk of heart attack and strokes.
  • It may help in weight loss.
  • It helps protect bones.
  • It boosts our immune system.
  • Many studies have even found, it helps in battle against cancer.

    And the list goes on.

Meanwhile there are also some harmful effects of tea. High consumption of black tea that contains caffeine can cause mild to serious effects like headache, nervousness, sleeping problems, diarrhoea, irritability, dizziness, etc. Simply saying “Excess of anything is bad.”

The world isn’t over yet. Tea has spread its wing and given us a kind that’s beneficial for us in the form of ‘Green tea’.

Why everyone should drink Green Tea?

Tea is one of the oldest and a completely natural drink on the globe and Green Tea, the healthiest of the tea industry. The difference is not in the plant but the way its leaves are processed. Green tea leaves are steamed rather than fermented. Its health benefits combined with delicious flavour has given it a new height. It has been researched and found that green tea inhibits the growth of cancerous cells, effectively removing the risk of certain type of cancer. It also reduces cholesterol. It has been found that green tea removes the bad cholesterol from our body. It improves our diet and has come out as an important ingredient in beauty products. It also helps in removing decay from the teeth.
Meanwhile black and oolong do have some similar benefit but Green Tea comes out as a winner. So if you are not already a tea lover, be one.

In the words of C.S.Lewis, “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me” and Fyodor Dostoyevsky, “I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.” So what are you waiting for. Grab a cup, pour in and live.

Yoga for Belly Fat

Corporate or non-corporate, our hectic lifestyle and busy schedules often leave us burned out and tired. Additionally, unhealthy eating habits, lack of exercise, and high-stress levels – all of these give rise to a vanity devoid concerning problem – A Flabby Tummy.

Yoga, a centuries-old way of relieving stress and improving strength and flexibility helps you to have a healthy body and mind surpassing the inevitable stress levels of our lives.

“The Belly” – An epidemic lifestyle problem is forcing people to be cautious of their expanding waistlines that have adverse repercussions and results in increased instances of metabolic disorders like, cancer, diabetes and other.

The wider your abdomen and hips are, the higher is the level of risk of falls, joint pain, and digestive problems. However, there are no shortcuts to get rid of abdominal fat. Proper diet, combined with a good and guided fitness routine, is the only way to solve this lifestyle epidemic problem.

Yoga for Belly Fat

The word ‘Yoga’ has been derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yug’ which refers to the

union of our individual consciousness and the universal consciousness.

A misconception that Yoga involves only a set of exercises to hold certain postures for a few seconds and is meant for those who were already fit, is fundamentally flawed. Eliminating the pseudo-truth, the skill lies in understanding the mechanism of different asanas and their effectiveness.

Yoga aims at making you fit by increasing flexibility, by twisting the body in all directions; sideward, forward, backward, upside down and other poses that help in

opening up the otherwise rusted muscles and thereby facilitate weight loss.

Before you decide to start the journey towards a healthier body, it is important to understand the various factors that contribute to weight gain. Apart from faulty dietary habits, one should identify that weight gain also stems from the inefficient functioning of various bodily functions.

Breathing practices in Yoga aim at cleansing, balancing and rejuvenating our inner organs and their functions. Various breathing exercises and basicasanashelp in increasing metabolic and heart rates.

All Yoga asanas aim at cleansing your inner mechanism, strengthening your core and stamina, increasing flexibility, and upping your metabolic rate.

From all walks of life, “Motherhood” is the beginning of a new life for every woman; however, pregnancy can have serious effects on the mother’s posture and abdominal weight. The pressure of carrying the baby for nine months, lifting, carrying and nursing the baby and pushing the stroller often takes a toll on the spine and back muscles and deforms the posture. Regular practice of yoga before and after pregnancy helps in improving posture by opening up the shoulder and chest and relieving stiffness of all joints, most importantly of the hips.

Yoga helps in bringing about a balance in between that previous and the present life and helps the body to get back to its normal rhythm gradually. But it is best to start doing yoga only after 6 months of delivery to avoid injuries and complications.

Physical exercise has always been held important for the overall well-being as well as to keep health-related troubles at bay but it should always be kept in mind that “any form of physical activity will remain futile and unproductive if not teamed with proper diet.”

  •   A controlled check on spices and processed food consumption.
  •   Home-cooked food, fresh fruits, and vegetables should be prime in one’s diet.
  •   Portion controlled eating – quantifying the amount of food consumed in one sitting to avoid binge eating.
  •   Understand your body’s requirements based on age, gender, lifestyle, and work pressure.

1. TriangularposeorTrikonasana

This asana works on the sides of your body, arms, and thighs. 2. The boat pose: You will feel your stomach muscles going for a toss but trust me,

this will kill that stubborn belly fat.

3. The bridge pose: This works wonders on your hips, thighs, stomach as well as back.

4. Plank: Builds strength and endurance in your abs, back, and core. The plank is one of the best exercises for core conditioning but it also works your glutes and hamstrings, supports proper posture, and improves balance.

DARK CHOCOLATE HEALTH BENEFITS: YUMMY YET HEALTHY

Keeping its sugar and fat content aside, dark chocolate is regarded as one of the most health-rewarding food items. Health perks of eating low sugar dark chocolate are very high in comparison to that of other comfort foods.

What makes dark chocolate so healthy?

  • It is rich in anti-oxidants
  • It contains theobromine
  • It has a high content of vitamins and minerals like Potassium, Magnesium, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Selenium etc.
  • It contains stimulants like caffeine inappropriate amount
  • It contains flavanols

How does dark chocolate benefit our body?

Replacing your regular chocolate bar with a bar of dark chocolate can bring about a categorical change in your health condition:

  • Dark chocolate keeps your heart healthy: Moderate consumption of dark chocolate prevents arteriosclerosis.e. stiffening and hardening of arteries. Anti-oxidants in the dark chocolate eliminate free radicals in our body thus preventing various heart ailments.  (Bad cholesterol) leads to higher heart risks and dark chocolate helps in reducing LDH. It also increases HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) level in our body. As a result, less cholesterol gets collected in arteries. Eating dark chocolate 3-4 times per week prevents calcification in the arteries by approximately 30%.
  • Regulates blood flow and keeps blood pressure under control: It keeps your blood pressure under check by regulating your blood flow and preventing blood clots. The cocoa phenols present in dark chocolate helps in lowering cholesterol. It increases the level of a healthy compound called epicatechin in our body.

Insulin resistance particularly causes type 2-diabetes mellitus and coronary artery diseases. Dark chocolates decrease LDL(bad cholesterol) level in our body which thus prevents the occurrence of such diseases.
  • Increases blood flow to the brain: Consumption of dark chocolate improves brain functioning. Higher the content of flavanols, better the blood flow in the brain. It thus has a relaxing and soothing effect on our mind.

As we grow old different forms of brain impairments are observed. Dark chocolate helps in diminishing these aging effects.

It aids verbal fluency and cognitive functioning of the brain in elderly people.

The stimulants like caffeine and theobromine present in dark chocolate improve brain functioning in the short run.

  • Elevates skin condition: The bioactive compounds like flavanols present in dark chocolate augments hydration of the skin. It also helps in reducing the effects of sun exposure by increasing the amount of blood flow to the skin. Better blood circulation in the skin boosts its glow.

Consumption of dark chocolates 3-5 times a week for a few months raises the level of minimum erythemal dose (the minimum UVB light which causes redness of skin after sun exposure). Thus it not only reduces sun-induced damage but also improves the immunity of skin towards sun exposure.

So grab a bar of dark chocolate and gobble it up!

7 ways to make salads more appetizing for the health conscious:

Salads are a commonly sought option for people who wish to lose weight or ones who are committed to fitness goals. However, the one big factor that prevents people from choosing this highly healthy and nutritious meal is its dry texture and blandness. Even after eating a lot, one may feel like they aren’t that full even when they are. So here are five suggestions to make salads more appetizing. These options offer some solid and consistent bases on which salads can be prepared.

  1. Oats based:

All that one may need to do is boil a little oats in microwave with little water to prepare some oats porridge. This when added with certain spices as per taste makes a tasty and appetizing filler. Oats are great source of protein and certain minerals and vitamins. Add salad to it and you may not feel the need to add any sauce or eat too much.

  1. Cereal based:

A lot of healthy cereal like wheat flakes, rice barn, muesli can be used to add to salads which can make one feel fuller in no time. Just remember to add more salad and less of cereals as ones like muesli do contain some calories. A little moistening with some sauces like salsa or Italian dressing can work well for taste.

  1. Poha or flattened rice based:

Poha or flattened or beatened rice can be moistened and roasted to lend a roasty taste along with salad. The salad may be steamed or roasted with the poha and spices like turmeric, salt and red chilli powder can be added to this.

  1. Kurmura or Puffed rice based:

Kurmura are easily available in indian market or stores and are popular ingredient to prepare bhels, an indian dish. This puffed rice if eaten in moderation helps fill the stomach and lends an appetizing feel in a short time when mixed with salads. For taste, tamarind sauce or green chutney can be added to lend it the feel and taste of traditional indian bhel.

  1. Khakra based:

Take out few khakras and crunch them into little pieces. This little work of art can be added with some healthy sauces to the salad and shall help make the salad more interesting and tasty. The khakras also have their own flavors, so sauces can be avoided too. Homemade chutneys can help enhance the indian flavor and feel of this type of meal.

  1. Cooked Sprouts based:

Sprouts with their high protein content are one of the best and most nutritious fillers that can act as bases to salads. However it is always highly advised to cook the sprouts to make them more easily digestible for body. Sauces like thousand island taste well with the sprout base. The veggies can be raw or cooked or steamed. The overall recipe if cooked can be added with lemon as that shall help retain the iron content from sprouts.

How to know what food is healthy & what’s not??

At least since a decade now, there has been a visible surge in the number of people wanting to be fit, be more active, defy aging & look n feel good at any age!.. & it goes without saying that exercising, proper rest & sleep as well as eating right is a must. Of all these factors, EATING RIGHT is what people are most confused about!

What does one do when every single day the media, the internet & even the people around you ( who keep changing their own views too) CONFUSE the hell out of you, about what food is good for you & what food does more harm than good  to you ???

For every ‘Scientific’ research that proves that a food is good for you, there is another equally strong & equally ‘scientific’ research that proves how that food harms you!!

Here are some actual internet articles & News headlines with conflicting data :

1) Saturated Fat Linked to Heart Disease

2) Stroke risk lowered with a high protein diet

3) A diet of Animal Protein could be as harmful as smoking

4) High protein diets can hurt the kidneys

5) Research Review : High Protein diets, safe for kidneys

6) Low carb diet may lower Heart disease risk

7) Low carb diet can make you Unhealthy & shorten your life.

I gathered them to show you just how crazy we have become about analyzing the food that goes in our mouth. It’s no wonder we are all so confused about what we are supposed to eat.  One day we wake up and meat is bad for us. The next day, meat is good for us and is the reason we are alive today.  Another day, eating low carb is great for weight loss and great for blood vessel function.  Wait, low carb is not good for cardiovascular function though.  But isn’t weight loss easier on a low carb diet?  And isn’t weight loss good for cardiovascular function?

Anyways, I think what I am trying to say is that knowing what to eat is extremely complicated for a lay man.. even for a well read lay man! Seriously, how can we be expected to eat healthy, when we can’t even agree on what healthy is?

Whenever you start to feel overwhelmed or confused about what to eat, remember one word…SERF.

What is SERF?

Simply. Eat. Real. Food.

That’s it.No boisterous claims or elaborate studies to confuse you.  Simply eat real food.

But what exactly is real food?

Here’s how I define it.

Real food has a short shelf life :

Want to know how ‘old’ or ‘stale’ is the fast food burger you ordered ??? At least 1 month old. & who knows.. even 2 years old!!

This is clearly not real food. Real food has a short shelf life and should go bad within a few days of being picked or purchased. You will know you’re buying lots of real food when your refrigerator & fruit basket fills up and empties itself every few days.

If you have stocked a lot of non-food ‘things’ like farsan, biscuits, coke, pepsi ,chips, ready to eat foods, jams etc. then you know why your waistline bulges despite those senseless 500 crunches you do religiously!

Real food doesn’t need a fancy package, or any package at all.

It’s funny to me when I see protein bars using their package to promote their “lower sugar”, “12 grams of protein”, and “richness in branch chain amino acids”.  I would much rather have sprouts or a few eggs that have more protein, more BCAA’s & NO sugar.  But sprouts & egg whites are a lot more humble so it doesn’t need the fancy label to tell you how cool it is. All this good stuff also comes with the “milkCHOCOLATE flavoured coating” and “sugar free” sweeteners that are linked to memory loss, stroke, increased appetite & a whole lot of  disorders. Don’t get caught up in fancy marketing techniques or outlandish claims.  Most real food doesn’t have any packaging at all.

Real food has a recent connection to the earth.

When it comes to getting the most nutrition out of our food, time is not on our side.  The shorter time a food can spend away from its natural environment on earth, the more we can consider it real food.  Even super-foods like spinach lose most of their nutrition content within just 8 days of being harvested.  Imagine what kind of nutrition you are getting from the box of cereal that’s been sitting in your cabinet for months.  Real foods preferably come from a local source so they can be consumed within days of being harvested.

Real food doesn’t need to tell you how healthy it is.

The other day I saw commercial that shows the ingredients list on the packaging to prove to consumers that whole grains are the first ingredient in their product.  They even conveniently circle the whole grains to make it stand out & catch your gullible sight!  What most consumers miss though is the other ingredients like excess salt, sugar & chemicals that they can barely pronounce! Be suspicious of any claims that companies use to promote their own products.  Real food should speak for itself.

Real food ate real food.

It makes sense that unhealthy plants and animals could lead to unhealthy humans that are consuming those plants and animals. Chicken that is supposed to roam freely & in the sunlight but are all together crammed up in a small metal cage that hurts their claws & injures their body beyond description. They are treated like objects that don’t have a central nervous system & feel no pain!!  Animal cruelty is going out of hand, thanks to the fast food chains ! Factory food production practices are getting out of control.  While vegetarianism has a lot of benefits, if you choose to include non- veg in your diet, keep it to a minimum & do your best to consume meat of animals that were raised organically and humanely and you will greatly increase your consumption of real food.

Real food does not need to be altered.

Low fat, reduced fat. Reduced sugar.  Fortified foods like breads and cereals.  Skim milk. Gluten-free foods.  There are an endless amount of foods that are altered in order to make them more appealing to consumers. Remember that there is a LOT more that many people are willing to pay when you market a food like this!!

Real food doesn’t need to have components added or removed to make them healthy.  Real food is either healthy in its whole form, or it’s not.  It’s that simple.

Real food does not need to be fortified.

Breads, cereals, and grain-based products are the biggest culprits here. Almost every single one of them is depleted of their vitamins and minerals during processing.  The only reason you see those things in the final product in your grocery store is because food companies have learned how to artificially add them back in after processing.  I’m sorry, but if I have to eat bread to get my daily multivitamin then I would rather just take the multivitamin and skip the bread.  Real food should retain its vitamins and minerals from the earth all the way to your mouth.

Real food is not a supplement.Or WORSE a “meal” replacement!

Seems like a no-brainer, right?  Except for when you live in a society where everyone is looking for a quick fix or the next miracle drug.  Don’t be fooled by Nutrition companies that don’t sell a single product that could be considered real food. That’s not to say that some supplements can’t be beneficial, but they are no replacement for real food.  Make sure whatever supplements you choose to take are in addition to the real food diet you are already eating. Stay miles away from ‘meal replacement’ shakes & MLM companies marketing these! They have huge interests in marketing these products to you! ( I get at least 5-6 calls per month from these buggers, asking me to promote their product)

While we can’t expect to go out & gather all of our food straight from the earth and eat it immediately, we certainly can make better decisions when it comes to eating more real food.  Next time you think about reaching for that ‘atta’ noodles, that box of ‘fortified’ cereal, or loaf of bread because you’ve been told it’s healthy for you, just realize that it fails most, if not all, of the real food rules you see above.

If you wish to eat for junk food for taste, make sure to restrict the number of junk food meals to 1-2 meals per week!  & if possible, make burgers, whole grain pasta, pizza, biryani, fried rice or whatever else you like… at home using real food & fresh ingredients!! Have fresh OJ instead of guzzling a bottle of Fanta! Have a fresh fruit smoothie instead of a Thick shake!  Have home made ghee or white butter instead of the commercially available butter! Get the idea??? As long as you eat anything in moderation, it cant harm you!!

Simply Eat Real Food.

A rendezvous with Beauty

Often we hear people muttering or sometimes wondering, “What a beauty?” At this juncture as my nagging curiosity would have it, I want to know what exactly is Beauty. How do we define a thing to be beautiful? Is it just a thing or a person or a moment or something more? Is it a feeling or a thought or a realization? Is it really abstract or tangible?

There is certainly no absolute standard of beauty. That precisely is what makes its pursuit so interesting.

  • John Kenneth Galbraith

Well, if we go by the popular words of Beauty lying in the eyes of the beholder, then there is no real way of defining it. Anything and everything is beautiful. This kind of makes perfect sense, don’t you think? To let you in on it, let me share with you a personal encounter. Today, I was walking on the main street around my neighbourhood accompanied by a few fitness enthusiasts, some folks with their pets, canines and felines and some like me, soaking in the fresh morning air just because. It was still a couple of minutes due for sun to rise. As it so happened, I turned around a corner and was caught off guard by the scintillating first rays of the morning. I felt them touching my face. I was blinded for a moment, but then what I saw was nothing short of beautiful. A clear sky above, the sun coming out of the white fluffy clouds, its rays spreading in every possible direction, illuminating our tiny world…breathtaking was the picture! It was as if a painter had created a masterpiece within minutes. A speck of his brush and voila, a beauty! And just like that, within a moment, the day had begun. I saw that. I thought it was lovely. Yes, it was beautiful but only to my eyes. I felt the beauty and boy, it made my day. Others just went on their way, acknowledging silently the arrival of another day and accordingly hustling to make it on time for prior events.

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

  • Confucious

I know a lot of us find the sunrise beautiful, but it is not just about that. See, beauty demands to be felt in order to be seen. Beauty is everywhere if only we have the eyes to see it. It is in the flora around us, in the people who touch our lives, among the cute pets which make our world a better place, amidst the unexpected friends in our colleagues or the usual fellow commuters on the way to work. Beauty arrives to us in several shapes and sizes too. It can be as trivial as the wild flowers growing on the other side of the street you live on or as grand as the top view of the world from the Empire State building in New York! In all, it is our diverse perspectives and experiences, which make life a beautiful ride. Sure there are bumps along the road, some major setbacks too, but eventually it all adds up like a well written story. Everyone has got one.

There is nothing that makes its way more directly to the soul than beauty.

-Joseph Addison

A word of advice though, if you ever catch a glimpse of something remotely beautiful, just wait for a moment and observe it, not because it is so prim and proper but because it is so imperfectly perfect. And it is all happening to you by life itself, by the virtue of this astonishing world we live in. Nobody can time that! So go ahead and grasp its beauty. Make a mental picture of it in your head. Keep it preserved in there for the hard times. On this suggestive and friendly note, I would like to leave you all with a question of sorts (Mind over matter, eh!). Have you ever thought about what is it that you would like to see, when you look back at your life in the flashback, probably on one of the finer evenings, sipping coffee on the portico of your house, retired from the usual hustles, having done whatever needed to be done, achievements and failures, profits and losses, all scores settled? Do you feel content and peaceful? Do you feel beautiful inside? Do you feel your beauty?

MCI LAW ON DOCTORS PRESCRIBING GENERIC AND BRANDED DRUGS

The apex medical regulator of our country, The MCI (Medical Council of India) issued a circular on 21st April 2017 regarding the prescription of generic and branded drugs under the section of professional conduct, etiquette and ethics (clause 1.5 of the MCI).

A generic drug is a medication that has exactly the same active ingredient as the brand-name drug and yields the same therapeutic effect. It is the same in dosing, safety, strength, quality, the way it works, the way it is taken, and the way it should be used. Generic drugs do not need to contain the same inactive ingredients as the brand name product.

The circular quotes the 1.5 clause of the MCI that was amended in 2016 and it reads as under:

“Use of generic names of drugs: every physician should, as far as possible, prescribe drugs with generic names and he/she shall ensure that there is a rational prescription and use of drugs.”

The above law was put into force recently when our Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that the doctors should prescribe low-cost generic medicines to patients. According to him, poor people end up buying medicines from private stores at high prices because they don’t understand the handwriting on the prescription.

All the registered medical practitioners under the IMC Act are expected to comply with the provisions of the regulation issued to the deans, principals of medical colleges, directors of hospitals and presidents of all State Medical Councils. A strict disciplinary action will be taken against them if they fail to abide by the 1.5 clause of the MCI.

While almost all the medical bodies and doctors have accepted the above rule, it has not gone down well with medical bodies of some states. Tamil Nadu Government says that most of the generic drugs are at affordable rates and they also offer free medical care to the poor.

According to some paediatricians, cardiologists and neurologists, generic formulations of drugs which have slight variations could worsen a patient’s health. patients who switch from a branded to a generic drugcould have side effects or return of symptoms.

The Coimbatore Medical College says that if doctors want a specific combination, they might have to prescribe two tablets instead of one.

For further implementation in this regard, the government is also revising the National List of Essential Medicines of 2015 to include more medicines and the Jan Aushadhi Programme is also being reinforced, under which the government provides essential medicines at reasonable rates at specially established shops.
